Flee, Follow, Fight.                 November 19th 2000

2 Timothy 2:22, Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

1 Timothy 6:12, Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

Introduction: Paul had some exhortation for Timothy. God has some words of instruction for us today!

These three commands could not be more contradictory until we see them in their context.

Flee:

-Fornication: Physical and just as importantly; SPIRITUALLY.

-false brethren

-false gospels: love ‘gospel’, no repentance.

Just a word on fornication in general. When you are committed to your (future) spouse and your church, you’ll be less likely to run into problems.

The problem with some folks is they leave their options open.

*ILL. Brittany Spears says she will stay a virgin until she is married. Now if an ungodly rock singer will do that how ought we to live?

We come across people all the time who will never leave the RC, Anglicans or the United churches…where will we be in 10 years. Are you already committed? Or are your options open?

FALSE BRETHREN? What is the danger there assimilation.

-         I’m a Baptist but one summer with the Charismatics and the lines were being blurred… It won’t take long friends, I’m trying to spare you a lot of heart ache and pain.

-         Are we the only true Christians, no. But we are the only true kind of church. Much of what we believe and how the Bible is interpreted, is related to that fact. (i.e. service, missions, giving, leadership, church government…. How you view the church, your CONCEPT of the church will clarify or cloud your doctrine).

This is serious stuff. Proof: Reformers –sprinkle, robed priests, amillenialism, universal church.

*ILL. Listen, if all the saved are part of a universal church (as opposed to the family of God), then all it takes is a little weakness in the salvation department and you have Catholics as born again Christians and if that is true then they are part of the church… It is by this sort of reasoning that is bringing together the Protestants with Rome.

Paul speaks of fleeing youthful lusts.

-         there is fornication

-         folks in the last days there is said to be a religious system called a whore. We had better beware.

-         There are other lusts as well: to belong, for power, money, popularity,…

Let youthful lust be turned to zeal and let your zeal be turned toward the cause of Christ and the Word of God!

False gospels with no repentance are as dangerous as Hinduism and Atheism.

Follow:

righteousness, -This is righteous that must be lived out. A life of good works. We are saved unto good works.

faith, -resting in the promises of God as contained in the Bible.

charity, -here is a good place to plug the KJB. There are two words for “love” in the KJB. Charity is always in the context of the kind of love that Christians ought to have.

peace, -not a lot of that around today. The peace that this world offers will inaugurate the biggest blood bath the man has ever seen. The peace we have no man can take away.

Notice the context:

with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.

That is true fellowship.

The context is within a church relationship.

You’ll never get better fellowship than this.

Fight:

the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.

I wonder how many here have something worth fighting for. Is your faith worth fighting for? If it is, are you fighting by faith?

*ILL. Robert Moffat. “God has called me here so you will have to thrust my heart through with your spear.” He had a faith that he fought for. The warriors turned and walked away. Ten years later they were trembling in his presence -getting saved by the hundreds!

Instances of Faith: Noah, in building the ark, Gen. 6:14-22; Heb. 11:7. Abraham, in forsaking the land of his nativity at the command of God, Gen. 12:1-4; believing the promise of many descendants, Gen. 12:7; 15:4-8; in the offering up of Isaac, Gen. 22:1-10; Rom. 4:18-21; Heb. 11:8-19. Jacob, in blessing Joseph’s sons, Heb. 11:21. Joseph, concerning God’s providence in his being sold into Egypt, and the final deliverance of Israel, Gen. 50:20; Heb. 11:22. Jochebed, in caring for Moses, Ex. 2:2; Heb. 11:23. Pharaoh’s servants, who obeyed the Lord, Ex. 9:20. Moses, in espousing the cause of his people, Heb. 11:24-28; at the death of Korah, Num. 16:28,29.Israelites, when Aaron declared the mission of himself and Moses, Ex. 4:31; in the battle with the Canaanites, 1 Chr. 5:20, and other conquests, 2 Chr. 13:8-18[1]

Without faith it is impossible to please God!

Sometimes it is easier to trust God for our salvation than to trust Him for the groceries!

There was a major event we had to trust the Lord for recently. Not until Wednesday did we know for sure if we had 228 Ennerdale. This place is already rented. Praise the Lord we have a place to move in to!!!

lay hold on eternal life

What does God mean by this? I believe he means that we ought to get assurance of our salvation. Without that assurance you will have no fight and nothing to fight for.

whereunto thou art also called

God has called us to salvation. “Who will have all men to be saved…” Some of us get the notion that God instead of God holding His hand out with salvation, we see Him with a big stick or something. God is more willing to give you salvation and assurance than some of you realize!

and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses

What kind of a profession do we have?

What is our profession of faith?

Is it salvation and assurance? Is it an abundant life?

Have you witnessed of your faith before many witnesses ?
